Georgia Teacher Gets 25-Year Sentence for Sex with Student
Georgia Teacher Sentenced for Sex with 15-Year-Old Student

A former teacher at an elite private school in Georgia has been sentenced to 25 years in prison after admitting to having sex with a 15-year-old student. Sherri Maudlin, 61, who taught at Nathanael Greene Academy in Siloam, Georgia, pleaded guilty to statutory rape and improper sexual contact with her former student over a period of more than a year.

Details of the Case

Prosecutors stated that Maudlin repeatedly sexually assaulted the student between January and December 2022. She was not apprehended until June 2024, when investigators received a tip-off. During the investigation, police also discovered that another teacher, Bonnie Brown, 25, allegedly raped the same student at the school. Brown had previously been a student at Nathanael Greene Academy and was selected as homecoming queen in 2016.

Impact on the Community

The scandals have shocked the Siloam community and led to the closure of the elite private school in March 2025. Maudlin was sentenced this week after testifying that she had sex with the teenage student. She received a sentence of 12 years in prison followed by 25 years on probation. In her testimony, Maudlin claimed she raped the boy when she was in a 'dark place' in her life.

Legal Proceedings

Despite her admissions, Maudlin's attorney requested a lenient sentence, asking the judge to keep her out of prison entirely and impose only probation with 'weekend confinement' at the county jail. However, Ocmulgee Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge Terry Massey condemned the teacher, describing it as a 'sad situation.' Prosecutor T. Wright Barksdale expressed disappointment with the sentence, having requested at least 18 years in prison.

Second Teacher Charged

Bonnie Brown was arrested on March 21 and charged with improper sexual contact by an employee, aggravated child molestation, and statutory rape. Ashley Mitchell, attorney for the victim, stated that the student was sexually attacked by both women at the private school, with physical contact occurring both on and off campus. The teenager expressed relief at the arrests, stating, 'These women took advantage of their positions as my teachers. My school did not protect me as a child.'

Ongoing Case

Mitchell accused the school of failing to prevent the attacks and suggested there may be more victims, noting that one teacher had previously been written up for inappropriate conduct without any action taken. Brown, who was working as an elementary school teacher at Washington-Wilkes Primary School at the time of her arrest, has requested a jury trial and has not yet entered a plea.
