Floral tributes have been laid at an industrial estate in Scotland following the tragic death of a nine-year-old girl from West Yorkshire. Emergency services were called to Elliot Industrial Estate in Arbroath after the child was found with serious injuries at 12.02am on Monday, August 3. Paramedics attended the scene and the girl was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she sadly died.
Arrest and Investigation
Police have confirmed her death is being treated as suspicious. A 35-year-old white British man has been arrested in connection with the incident. Officers have confirmed the girl and the man were known to one another. Authorities are not looking for anyone else in relation to her death.
The girl's family, who are from West Yorkshire and were camping nearby at the time, are being supported by specialist officers, reports the Daily Record. Members of the public were spotted leaving flowers at the scene on Monday afternoon, reports Yorkshire Live.
Scene and Community Reaction
Photographs reveal an extensive cordon established at the site, covering a considerable grassy area, pavement and the adjoining road. A vehicle was also sealed off within the police boundary. A blue forensics tent has been erected on the grass.
Bill Smith, a resident from the nearby Hospitalfield estate, described the incident as "tragic", observing that the community is close knit. Speaking to the Daily Record, he said: "It's unbelievable. It's all everyone is talking about today as it's incredibly sad. Nobody seems to know what has happened. But it's tragic that a girl so young as lost her life here. There's a path from the houses that goes through the industrial estate down to the shop. It's a busy area through the day. My daughter works on the industrial estate and she was greeted by police this morning when she arrived. They had to show ID to get in. Everyone was in shock when they arrived to work."
Councillor Lois Speed, who represents the Arbroath East and Lunan ward, said: "The community is in shock at what has happened. My thoughts are with everyone that has been impacted."
Two workers at the estate also told the Record they arrived at 7.30am to discover the area cordoned off by police. One described it as "shocking" to learn what had occurred. They said: "You don't hear stuff like that happening here, it's quite shocking. We just don't know what's happened. It's terrible to hear what's happened, it's very sad to hear a little girl has died."
An employee at a neighbouring business added that the entire area was sealed off when he arrived that morning, with workers required to provide their name, identification and place of employment to officers before being allowed through. Speaking to the Record, he also mentioned that local residents occasionally walk their dogs through the area using the adjacent retail park.
