Manchester United legend Darren Fletcher was met with a chorus of cheers after he confronted an abusive fan following the win over Sabah FK. United cruised to a 4-0 over the Azerbaijani champions, with Matheus Cunha, Bruno Fernandes, Benjamin Sesko, and Lisandro Martinez all finding the net on Thursday night. However, not everyone was happy after the full-time whistle despite the victory in their first Champions League encounter of the season.
Fletcher intervenes after fan abuse
One fan was allegedly hurling abuse at Michael Carrick's players for not stopping as they made their way onto the team bus. His actions prompted former midfielder turned U18s head coach Fletcher to swiftly intervene and challenge the fan's behaviour. In clips circulated on social media, the former United midfielder can be heard shouting: "Hey, listen, it doesn't matter, you can't speak like that," while gesturing towards the supporter.
Fletcher received backing from the United faithful present, reports the Mirror, before the former caretaker manager added: "You're the reason people don't sign." The United supporters nearby erupted in approval once again before breaking into chants of "Fletcher, Fletcher, Fletcher" as the coach returned to his vehicle.
Carrick pleased with performance
United manager Carrick expressed satisfaction with his team's performance against Sabah, and when questioned whether he viewed the result as an ideal Champions League comeback, he responded: "Yeah, I think so. Kind of what we set out to achieve, really. I think it was a good performance, individually, collectively, pretty much all the way through the game, from start to finish. Boys that started, boys that came on the pitch, clean sheet, some goals and some good, exciting football. It was a good night all round."
Nevertheless, there were worrying signs for the United manager, with skipper Bruno Fernandes seeming to hobble as he departed Old Trafford. The Portuguese playmaker was spotted on camera leaving the ground with United personnel, walking tentatively as he greeted fans before heading home. Fernandes completed the entire 90 minutes in the Champions League encounter, looking comfortable throughout, indicating any issue is probably minor. United will be hoping that proves accurate with a clash against bitter rivals Man City looming on Sunday afternoon.
