Five more people have been arrested following a crash on the A66 near Middlesbrough that killed two police officers. The arrests include suspicion of threats to kill, bringing the total number of people arrested in connection with the incident to 17.
Details of the collision
The collision took place in the early hours of Saturday and involved two officers and five other people who were all killed seconds after a police pursuit had been abandoned. The five people, aged between 17 and 23, were in a Volkswagen Passat that was being driven the wrong way on the A66.
The car crashed with a police car which was going the right way, killing Cleveland Police PC Tom Clough, 38, and PC Matthew Blades, 37. The five individuals in the Passat have been named as Jakub Matusiak, 23, Cole Robert Worthy, 17, Theo Rae, 17, Makai Saddington, 18, and 23-year-old Michael Robert Cahill.
Arrests and investigation
The pursuit was abandoned just seconds before the crash, as the vehicle turned onto the A66 using the wrong carriageway. Five more people have now been arrested on suspicion of various offences, including threats to kill, after 12 more were arrested previously. The five individuals are aged 16 to 55.
