Police have introduced a dispersal zone in Everton following reports of youths setting off fireworks and throwing them at high-rise buildings. The order came into force at 3pm on Friday, September 25, and will remain in place until 3pm on Sunday, September 27.
Reports of fireworks and criminal damage
Merseyside Police said the move follows reports of young people behaving aggressively and setting off fireworks in Everton Park, with fireworks also allegedly being thrown at tower blocks and causing criminal damage. The dispersal zone covers parts of Everton and includes Everton Valley, Walton Breck Road, Robson Street, Breckfield Road North and South, Boundary Lane, West Derby Road, Brunswick Street, New Islington, Hunter Street, Byrom Street, Scotland Road and Kirkdale Road.
The powers have been authorised under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014.
Powers under the order
Under the order, police officers and Police Community Support & Traffic Officers can direct anyone they suspect is causing, or is likely to cause, crime, nuisance or anti-social behaviour to leave the designated area. Those directed to leave can be prevented from returning for up to 48 hours.
Officers also have powers to seize items, including vehicles, which they believe have been used in anti-social behaviour. Anyone who has previously been directed to leave and then returns to the area could commit an offence and may ultimately be arrested.
Inspector's appeal to parents
Neighbourhood Inspector Christopher Taylor said the order had been introduced to prevent further disruption and damage over the weekend. He said: “We have received recent reports of youths behaving aggressively and setting off fireworks in Everton Park. Fireworks have also been thrown at high-rise tower blocks and caused criminal damage to the premises.
“A dispersal order has therefore been introduced in the area to prevent any further disruption or damage over the weekend. Our officers will have an additional tool to disrupt the activities of anyone we suspect is likely to commit ASB. Patrols have also been stepped up to reassure our residents in the area.
“We are determined to ensure Everton Park and the wider community remains a safe and enjoyable place to live and visit. If we suspect or witness anyone causing anti-social behaviour they will be dealt with through the powers of this order.
“I would appeal to parents and guardians and urge them to inform their children of the dangers of using fireworks and to know where their child is this weekend. No parent wants a knock on their door from a police officer informing them that their child has been arrested or been involved in a serious accident.”
