Some 70 firefighters tackled a blaze that ripped through the ground floor of a two-storey warehouse in Wembley on Sunday. Ten fire engines were called to Alperton Lane in north London at around 2.47pm after the London Fire Brigade received 13 calls.
Crews from six stations mobilised
Footage on social media showed smoke billowing out of the ground floor window as firefighters worked to put out the blaze. Crews from Wembley, Acton, Northolt, Southall, Willesden, and Chiswick were mobilised to tackle the fire.
The fire destroyed half of the ground floor before being brought under control at 6.24pm. The cause of the fire is under investigation, reported the London Fire Brigade.
Warehouse area and nearby incidents
Alperton Lane sits about a mile away from Hanger Lane, connecting nearby via the A40 Western Avenue just west of the North Circular Road. The exact location of the fire is unknown, but the area is home to several commercial warehouses, including two used car dealerships, a plumbers’ merchant, and a packaging cash and carry. There are also several office blocks in the vicinity.
The fire comes just a few weeks after 150 people were evacuated from a Holiday Inn in Wembley, less than three miles away. Some 40 firefighters were called to the hotel after flames broke out on the second floor. There was another fire at a waste facility in Neasden at the end of August, with large plumes of dark grey smoke spotted billowing out over the Wembley skyline. The blaze affected several lines on the TfL network, including the Metropolitan line, as firefighters battled to quash the flames.
