Ferry port closed as 140 migrants rescued off Hampshire coast

Emergency services closed the area around Eastney Landing, where the Hayling Island ferry departs, on Sunday, 6 September, after around 140 migrants approached the Hampshire coast on a dinghy launched from the French coast.

The closure came after lifeboats were deployed as the dinghy neared the coast. The emergency services presence included the coastguard, police officers, ambulance crews and firefighters, with two RNLI boats also spotted in the area.

Rescue operation under way

Around 140 migrants were rescued as part of the operation. Further details are expected to follow as the response continues.
