An eight-year-old girl whose body was discovered on tribal lands in northern Arizona last month is believed to have been struck by a passing vehicle, the FBI has said.
Maleeka “Mollie” Boone went missing on 15 January after playing in her neighbourhood in the Coalmine Canyon area, about 240 miles (386km) north of Phoenix. Her body was later found on the tribal land.
Investigators believe it is possible that the driver did not realise they had hit the child, according to the FBI. The agency declined to provide further details about how they reached this conclusion or whether the driver had been identified.

Boone was the subject of a Turquoise Alert, a system specifically for missing Native Americans. The FBI continues to investigate the case.
