Father Who Died off Sussex Was Palestinian Refugee

Hossam Al-Khawas, a Palestinian refugee, died after entering the water with his family near Shoreham Fort in Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, the Palestinian embassy has confirmed.

Details of the Incident

On August 18, police, paramedics, coastguard crews and a lifeboat rushed to the scene as all four people were pulled from the water. Mr Al-Khawas, a woman and a teenage girl were pronounced dead. A young girl was also taken to hospital in a critical condition.

The Palestinian embassy confirmed the father was from the Rashidieh Camp in Lebanon. The embassy said it was unable to confirm the names of the other family members.

Official Response

The Prime Minister warned of the dangers of open water swimming after the incident, which he described as “a terrible family tragedy”.
