Missouri Father of Three Fatally Shot After Offering Woman Ride to Warming Shelter

A Good Samaritan father-of-three was shot and killed in Missouri after reportedly offering a woman a ride to a warming shelter, according to police authorities. The tragic incident has left a family devastated and raised questions about the risks of helping strangers in need.

Details of the Tragic Incident

William Palmer was discovered with a fatal gunshot wound to the head on the side of a road in the early hours of Sunday morning. The St Louis Metropolitan Police Department confirmed they found his body after responding to reports of a shooting.

According to investigators, Palmer had been collecting scrap metal with a friend when they encountered 36-year-old Brittany Rivoire at a gas station. His fiancée, Riyen Jones, told local media that Rivoire had approached Palmer asking for a ride to a warming shelter because she was cold.

"If there was a dumpster in sight, he was looking in it," Jones told First Alert 4, describing Palmer's scrap metal collecting habits. "As far as we know, she asked him at a gas station to take her to a warming shelter because she was cold."

Events Leading to the Shooting

Police reports indicate that Rivoire entered Palmer's truck and traveled with the two men for some time. At one point, Palmer's friend became concerned about Rivoire's behavior and exited the vehicle, leaving Palmer alone with the woman.

Surveillance footage later captured the moment Rivoire allegedly shot Palmer in the head before driving his truck several blocks and abandoning the vehicle. The cold-blooded nature of the attack has shocked both the family and local community.

"For somebody to take him for granted when all he was doing was helping her and then to do it to basically take his truck is... I can't wrap my head around it," Jones said in an emotional statement to reporters.

Criminal Charges and Investigation

Brittany Rivoire now faces multiple serious charges including:

  • First-degree murder
  • Unlawful possession of a firearm
  • Armed criminal action
  • First-degree tampering with a motor vehicle

She remains in custody without bond as the investigation continues. The St Louis Metropolitan Police Department has been contacted for additional information about the ongoing case.

Remembering a Generous Spirit

Family members described Palmer as a habitual helper who frequently assisted strangers in need. "I used to tell him all the time not to pick up people off the side of the road anymore," Jones revealed. "He did it a lot. If he saw someone walking, he was picking them up and taking them as far as he could."

A GoFundMe page established by Jones has raised over $2,000 for household support and funeral expenses. The fundraiser describes Palmer as "the glue to our family" and "a giver," highlighting his generous nature.

Palmer and Jones shared three children together: a six-year-old daughter, an 18-year-old daughter, and a 21-year-old son. The fundraising description paints a picture of a devoted family man: "William Palmer was the nicest, big-hearted, helpful, and all-around great person, loving father, great friend, just a wonderful person."

The tragic loss has left a family without their primary provider and protector, while raising broader questions about community safety and the risks faced by those who extend kindness to strangers in vulnerable situations.
