A preliminary hearing for Caleb Flynn, the former American Idol contestant accused of murdering his wife, has been postponed until March 26, according to Ohio court records. The hearing was originally scheduled for today but was delayed after Flynn's defence attorney filed a waiver for a speedy trial.
Flynn, 39, pleaded not guilty in the shooting death of his wife Ashley Flynn on 16 February in their Tipp City, Ohio, home. He remains in custody at Miami County Jail on a $2 million bond. The hearing will determine if there is probable cause to proceed to trial; if so, the case will be sent to a grand jury.
Flynn, who competed in the 2013 season of American Idol, was arrested on 20 February and charged with murder, two counts of felonious assault, and two counts of tampering with evidence. The criminal complaint states that Ashley Flynn was shot with a 9mm handgun. Flynn called 911 around 2:30 a.m. on 16 February, reporting that his wife was bleeding and unresponsive, and that a home intruder might still be present. Police later indicated that the crime scene, which showed signs of forced entry, appeared 'staged'. The couple's two young daughters were at home asleep and unharmed.
Ashley Flynn, 37, was a middle school girls' volleyball coach and substitute teacher for Tipp City Schools. Caleb Flynn worked as vice president of sales for a commercial flooring company. His defence attorney, L. Patrick Mulligan, questioned the thoroughness of the investigation and the high bail, stating it prevented Flynn from attending his wife's funeral.
