England's international friendly against Mexico at Wembley Stadium on Thursday evening was delayed by 10 minutes after a security breach moments before the scheduled kick-off. A fan managed to enter the pitch area, prompting stewards and security personnel to intervene and remove the individual.
Security Incident Delays Start
The incident occurred as the teams were preparing to start the match at 8pm BST. The fan was seen running onto the field before being apprehended by stewards. The kick-off was subsequently pushed back to 8:10pm to ensure the safety of players and officials.
A spokesperson for Wembley Stadium confirmed that the delay was due to a security issue, stating: “There was a brief security incident ahead of kick-off which was quickly resolved. The match started shortly after the scheduled time.”
Match Proceeds Without Further Incident
Once the fan was removed, the match kicked off without any further disruptions. England went on to win 1-0, with a goal from Chelsea's Mason Mount in the 47th minute. The victory extended England's unbeaten run to 16 matches.
The incident comes amid heightened security concerns at major sporting events. Wembley Stadium has strict security protocols in place, and the breach is under review to prevent future occurrences.
