Eleven fire appliances tackle Washington industrial estate blaze

Eleven fire appliances tackled a blaze at Crowther Industrial Estate in Washington, with firefighters working into the following day to make the area safe. Crews were called shortly before 6pm on Tuesday, August 11, after flames ripped through a building on the site.

High volume of calls due to visible smoke

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said call operators received a high volume of calls because smoke was visible from the A1, A194 and the Sunderland Highway. Northumbria Police also attended to assist fire crews after a cordon was set up around the fire.

A spokesperson for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "We can confirm on the evening of Tuesday, August 11, eleven fire appliances, including the Aerial Ladder Platform attended a fire at a commercial property."

The emergency call was received at 17:53, and crews from Gateshead, Washington, Rainton Bridge, Marley Park, West Denton and South Shields Community Fire Stations were dispatched to the scene. The incident is ongoing.
