Riot police in Rotterdam deployed high-pressure water cannons on Saturday to disperse a right-wing demonstration that turned violent, following clashes between protesters and law enforcement.
The incident unfolded as a group of predominantly young, male demonstrators attempted to breach police barriers. Officers in full riot gear formed lines to contain the protest, which was organised by the nationalist group Nederland Herstel (Netherlands Restoration).
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos as protesters threw projectiles and launched fireworks towards police lines before authorities escalated their response with the water cannon vehicle.
The demonstration was reportedly organised in response to the Netherlands' immigration policies. The group had gathered despite previous warnings from local authorities about the potential for unrest.
Rotterdam police confirmed multiple arrests were made during the operation. "We were left with no alternative after repeated warnings were ignored," stated a police spokesperson. "Our priority remains maintaining public order and ensuring citizen safety."
