Detectives have launched a murder investigation after a man was found dead and a child was left seriously injured in Dungannon, Co Tyrone. A male has been arrested on suspicion of murder and attempted murder and remains in police custody.
Police response and arrest
Officers were called to Lisnahull Road in Dungannon this morning, Saturday, 29th August. A terraced house on the street was sealed off, with numerous police cars seen in the vicinity. The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service (NIAS) dispatched a helicopter crew, three emergency crews, an advanced care paramedic, two ambulance officers and a Hazardous Area Response Team to the location.
A child was transported to Royal Belfast Hospital for Sick Children. Emergency responders confirmed a man, who has not been identified, was found dead at the property.
Local reaction
A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesperson said: "Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland's Major Investigation Team have launched a murder investigation after a man was found dead alongside a seriously injured child in the Lisnahull Road area of Dungannon this morning, Saturday, 29th August."
Officers are appealing to the public to stay clear of the area. Sinn Féin councillor Deirdre Varsani, who chairs Mid Ulster District Council, described a "strong sense of shock" in the local area, adding: "There is a strong police presence in the area today, trying to carry out investigations and find out and establish what happened."
Varsani noted the deceased was a long-standing member of the local community and urged anyone with information to pass it to police. A further update is expected in due course.
