Newly released footage shows a drunk driver who killed a bride on her wedding night crying and demanding to call her father while in police custody. Jamie Lee Komoroski, 27, had been drinking at several bars in Folly Beach, South Carolina, before she crashed her Toyota Camry into a golf cart carrying the bride, groom, and two guests as they left their wedding reception on April 28, 2023.
Crash details
Komoroski was driving at 65mph in a 25mph zone, with a blood-alcohol level three times the legal limit. The crash killed Samantha Hutchinson, 34, and seriously injured her new husband, Aric Hutchinson, 36, and their guests. When officers arrived, Komoroski took no responsibility and claimed she "didn't do anything wrong" as she was taken into custody.
Police station behavior
At the Folly Beach police station, she whined, cried, and demanded to call her father, according to footage obtained by WCSC. "I just wanna like, get this over with and go home," she said tearfully while handcuffed to a chair. "I can't call my dad?" she asked, before an officer told her she was not allowed to make a phone call yet. "Well, what did I do?" she asked again, seemingly denying her actions. "Nobody has any proof of anything that I did, so give me the right to call my dad."
At that point, she noticed the wall-mounted camera and addressed it directly: "Oh, hi camera, yeah, I'm crying because he's not letting me call my f--king father, even though they haven't proven s--t and don't have any right for me not to be able to contact my family or anyone that I want to, so yeah, hello, I’m crying. Ooh, I'm just being a little baby," she said in a mocking tone.
Aftermath and sentencing
Samantha Hutchinson died while still wearing her wedding dress, while Aric suffered a brain injury and several broken bones. In court during Komoroski's sentencing in 2024, Aric revealed his wife's last words: "On the golf cart, she told me she didn't want the night to end, and I kissed her on the forehead, and then the next thing I remember is waking up in the hospital."
Komoroski pleaded guilty to reckless homicide, felony DUI causing death, and two counts of felony DUI causing great bodily injury. She promised to spend the rest of her life helping addicts and warning others about drinking and driving. In court, she said she was "devastated, deeply ashamed and sorry" for what she did. "I wish I could go back and undo this terrible tragedy. But I cannot. I will live the rest of my life with intense regret for what happened that night," she said. "I pray God stands by the side of my victims and their families and loved ones for the rest of their lives."
