Greater Manchester Police have released footage of a pursuit where a Nissan Qashqai reached speeds of up to 100mph on 30mph roads through Salford. The chase began around 10.30am after officers observed the car being driven dangerously and erratically at high speeds. The driver failed to stop, triggering the pursuit.
Details of the pursuit
During the 45-minute chase, 10 police vehicles and a helicopter from the National Police Air Service were deployed. The car travelled along the East Lancashire Road, drove against traffic around several roundabouts, and passed through an underground supermarket car park. At one point, the driver reverse-rammed an unmarked police vehicle, causing minor damage.
Arrest and injuries
The pursuit ended when officers deployed a stinger, bringing the vehicle to a stop. A 36-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified, and failing to stop. He remains in police custody for questioning. A woman was taken to hospital with minor injuries after the suspect's car collided with hers. An officer also suffered a hand injury during the stinger deployment and was treated in hospital.
Police comment
Police Sergeant Neil Molloy of the Specialist Operations Team's Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit said: "This level of driving is obviously extremely dangerous, and I'm thankful to report that no one was seriously hurt during this pursuit. The reckless actions of this man put members of the public at risk, and we're incredibly lucky that no one suffered serious injuries as a result of his actions. Driving in this manner through built-up residential areas is completely unacceptable, and I am pleased that our officers acted swiftly and professionally to bring the incident to a safe conclusion, secure an arrest and seize the vehicle."
