A man in his 30s is fighting for life in hospital after his van crashed into a roundabout in Consett during a police chase. Durham Constabulary said the driver sustained serious injuries after a short pursuit ended in a collision.
Incident details
Officers responded to reports of a disturbance at an address in the Catchgate, Stanley area at around 10.10pm on Wednesday, September 23. A suspect vehicle was spotted nearby and failed to stop for police.
Following a short pursuit, the white Renault Kangoo van collided with Villa Real roundabout in Consett. The driver, a man in his 30s, was taken to the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, where he remains in a critical condition.
Referral to IOPC
As is standard practice, the incident has been referred to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). A statement from Durham Constabulary confirmed the referral and the man's condition.
