A dog that was swept off rocks into the ocean off the New South Wales south coast has been rescued after swimming nearly 800 metres to a small island. The incident occurred on Monday, prompting a call to Marine Rescue NSW in Batemans Bay.
Unit commander Rod Ingamells said the dog had swum to Snapper Island by the time rescuers arrived. A volunteer who is a dog lover entered the water, but the animal played hide and seek before being coaxed onto a jetski near Smugglers Cove after about an hour.
The rescue was aided by two new jetskis delivered last year, which were essential in rough conditions that prevented a larger boat from approaching the rocky island. Ingamells noted the dog, believed to be named Oscar, was the first rescue using the new craft.
Oscar was taken to a vet with cut paws from the rocks. Eurobodalla Shire Council reported the dog was not microchipped, but owners have made contact. A yard inspection is required before reunification, highlighting the importance of pet registration and identification.
Ingamells praised the community's response, with many offering assistance via radio. The team has previously rescued whales, dolphins, kangaroos, and sheep during floods.
