A dispersal zone has been introduced in Birkenhead town centre following a rise in reports of anti-social behaviour. The order came into effect at 2pm on Wednesday 29 July and will last until 2pm on Friday 31 July.
Area Covered and Police Powers
The dispersal zone includes Birkenhead town centre, the Central Hotel, Grange Road, Argyle Street, Clifton Crescent, St Werburgh Square, The Woodlands, and surrounding public spaces. Officers will maintain a visible presence to deal with any incidents.
Under Section 34 of the Anti-Social Behaviour & Policing Act 2014, police can direct individuals to leave the area if they are engaged in, or likely to become involved in, anti-social behaviour. Those directed must stay away for up to 48 hours. Officers can also seize items used for such behaviour. Returning after being directed to leave is an offence and could lead to arrest.
Reason for the Measure
The dispersal zone was implemented after increased reports of youth-related offences and anti-social behaviour. Recent incidents include bike robberies, youths in possession of weapons, intimidation of local residents, and assault.
Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Nicola Hughes said: “Sadly we have received increased reports of youth-related anti-social behaviour and criminality in the last few weeks. We have increased patrols in the area which is in addition to our dedicated neighbourhood police officers and they will deal with any issues and prevent offences from taking place.”
