A residential street in South Manchester was transformed into a major crime scene this afternoon after a gunman opened fire in a brazen daylight attack.
The incident occurred on Wilmslow Road in the Rusholme area, a typically bustling thoroughfare now cordoned off by a significant police presence. Eyewitnesses reported hearing multiple loud bangs, initially mistaken for fireworks, shortly after 2:30 PM.
Greater Manchester Police have confirmed they are responding to reports of a firearms discharge. Armed officers and police dogs were swiftly deployed to the area as part of a large-scale operation to locate the suspect, who fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
Eyewitnesses Describe Panic and Confusion
Local residents described a scene of sudden panic. "I heard three or four really loud pops in quick succession," one shopkeeper, who wished to remain anonymous, stated. "It didn't sound like a car backfiring. People on the street started running and looking around, confused and scared. It's terrifying that this happens in the middle of the day."
Another witness reported seeing a man running from the area moments after the sounds were heard, though no detailed description of the suspect has been officially released.
Major Police Response Underway
The police response was immediate and substantial. A large section of Wilmslow Road remains closed in both directions as forensic teams work behind blue screens to gather evidence. Tactical support units and detectives are conducting a door-to-door canvass for further witnesses and any available CCTV footage.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "We were called at around 2:35 PM to reports of a firearms discharge on Wilmslow Road. Enquiries are in the very early stages. There have been no reports of any injuries at this time. A scene remains in place and there will be an increased police presence in the area."
The motive for the shooting remains unclear. Detectives are pursuing several lines of enquiry but have not confirmed if they are looking for a specific individual or if this was a targeted attack.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Greater Manchester Police immediately, quoting log number 1234 of today's date.
