A row over a missing 'thank you' after a door was held open escalated into a fatal shooting at a Dallas shopping centre, police have said.
Keona Hampton, 22, is accused of shooting and killing 41-year-old Cecila Simpson in a car park outside a PetSmart on Tuesday afternoon. The altercation began as both women left a Five Below store, with Simpson reportedly upset that Hampton did not thank her for holding the door.
The argument continued inside a nearby PetSmart, where Simpson told staff she was being followed. After leaving, the dispute resumed in the car park, captured on a witness's mobile phone. The footage shows Hampton allegedly firing a gun, then walking away holding a black and silver handgun.
Police arriving at the scene found Simpson with multiple gunshot wounds; she was pronounced dead at a local hospital. Hampton fled but was arrested hours later when officers stopped her vehicle. She was still wearing the same clothes seen in store surveillance footage.
In custody, Hampton admitted to fighting with Simpson and an employee earlier. She claimed she threw a drink bottle and pulled out a gun after a witness tried to intervene, telling detectives she shot Simpson to 'get her away from her'. Hampton has been charged with murder and is held at Dallas County Jail.
