A 24-year-old e-bike rider has died after a suspected hit-and-run crash involving a moped in west London. The incident occurred on North Pole Road in North Kensington at approximately 1.20am today, and the road remains sealed off.
Bystanders discovered a seriously injured man on the road, which is lined with shops, restaurants and residential properties. Paramedics were alerted, but the cyclist was pronounced dead at the scene. His next of kin have been informed, Metropolitan Police confirmed.
Police launch investigation and appeal
Officers have launched an appeal after CCTV suggests a moped was involved in the crash at about 1.14am. The moped driver failed to stop, and the road remains cordoned off for further enquiries, the force said.
Detective Chief Inspector Phil Wilkins, investigating from Hammersmith and Fulham CID, said: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family at what is a very difficult time. We have launched a full investigation and are working hard to get answers and trace the moped driver.”
“As part of this, we’re urging anyone who was in the area at the time and may have seen the e-bike or the moped to get in touch with us as soon as possible. If you have any information that could help, please come forward,” he added.
Crash history on North Pole Road
The victim’s bike appeared to be strewn near a parallel crossing, although it has not been confirmed whether the man was crossing the road at the time of the crash. A parallel crossing appears similar to a zebra crossing, but cyclists are allowed to use it without dismounting, and drivers have to stop to give way to them like they do for pedestrians. The crossing is on Cycleway 27, which connects East Acton in the west and Walthamstow Central in east London.
The junction of North Pole Road, Bracewell Road and Latimer Road has clocked several crashes over the years involving pedestrians and cyclists. In May 2022, a 17-year-old cyclist was seriously injured in a crash involving a car, according to CycleStreets Network, which compiles crashes using official collision data. A pedestrian, a 33-year-old man, was killed on June 29, 2013, after being hit by a car on North Pole Road.
