A man in his 20s died at Cullercoats Bay on Sunday evening, casting what local swimmers described as a 'dark shadow' over the North Tyneside coastal community. Police confirmed the death on Monday, with a second man hospitalised in a serious but stable condition.
Emergency Response and Incident Details
Emergency services were called to reports of individuals in difficulty in the water at around 6.30pm on Sunday, July 19. Rescue teams from the RNLI, North East Ambulance Service, and the Great North Air Ambulance Service attended the scene. It is understood the men had been on the southern pier before getting into trouble in the water.
The RNLI spokesperson said: 'We were tasked by the coastguard at 18.23 on Sunday 19th July, in response to a person in the water and launched within minutes as part of a multi-agency operation.' A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson added: 'We dispatched three double crewed ambulances, a clinical team leader, a duty officer, two vehicles from our Hazardous Area Response Team and were supported by Great North Air Ambulance. One patient was checked over at the scene and one patient was taken to Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital.'
Community Reaction and Water Safety Concerns
Regular swimmers Michaela Sweeney and Julie Anne, who swim daily at Cullercoats Bay, spoke of the tragedy's impact. Michaela said: 'We go snorkel-swimming and you put your head in and see so much, it's peaceful. This is our happy place normally, but what has happened now is so sad.' Julie added: 'It's a nice day but there's a sad shadow over everyone here. I think everyone will be feeling it today.' She expressed particular upset as a mother, saying: 'I just feel for his poor family, to have this right at the start of the summer. It's awful.'
Julie also noted 'misinformation' on social media, urging: 'Everyone just needs to wait for the final coroner's report.' The pair had postponed their own swim due to rough seas on Sunday and discovered the emergency when they planned to check conditions at around 6.30pm.

Chief Inspector Simon Wotton of Northumbria Police said: 'This is an absolutely tragic incident and the thoughts of everyone here at Northumbria Police are with anyone affected by this incident. We'd like to thank our partner agencies who were there working alongside police last night, and I am sure they are just as saddened by this outcome as we are.' He added: 'We know this will be a greatly shocking and distressing incident for those involved and for the local community, but we'd ask the public to respect the privacy of anyone who may have been affected.'
The incident comes amid heightened water safety concerns across the UK, particularly during hot weather. Cullercoats Bay is a popular spot for cold-water swimming, and the tragedy occurred just before the busy summer holiday period.
