Matthew James Ruth, 24, has been identified as the gunman who killed three police officers and wounded two others in rural York County, Pennsylvania, before being shot dead by law enforcement. The incident occurred on Wednesday as officers attempted to serve a warrant related to stalking and trespassing charges.
According to court documents, the violence began when officers approached a home to execute a warrant for Ruth, who was being sought for stalking his ex-girlfriend. The suspect opened fire with an AR-15-style rifle from inside the residence, killing Detectives Cody Becker, Mark Baker, and Isaiah Emenheiser. Two other officers were injured but are in stable condition.
The chain of events started late Tuesday when the ex-girlfriend's father reported a man in camouflage with binoculars peering through a window. A trail camera captured images of Ruth carrying an AR-15. The ex-girlfriend told police Ruth had set her truck on fire in August, leading to arson charges. A warrant was issued, and officers were ambushed when they arrived at the property.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro called for societal change, stating, 'We need to help the people who think that picking up a gun is the answer to resolving disputes.' US Attorney General Pam Bondi described violence against police as 'a scourge on our society.'
The shooting is one of the deadliest for law enforcement in Pennsylvania this century, matching a 2009 incident where three officers were killed. Community members held vigils and saluted as a procession of police vehicles accompanied the bodies of the fallen officers to the coroner's office.
