At least 16 people have died after a huge fire at a care home, as footage showed the building completely engulfed by the blaze. The fire broke out on Friday night in Pitrufquen, Araucania Region of Chile.
Ten residents evacuated
General Miguel Herrera, head of the police in Araucanía, said “only ten people who lived in the nursing home were able to be evacuated. We must regret the death of 16 people, who are those who have been found by firefighters at this time.”
Cause under investigation
Police are still working to establish what caused the fire. Footage shared online showed large numbers of fire service personnel trying to tackle the blaze. Firefighters at the scene also said some people may still be trapped inside the building, according to reports.
The fire took place at the El Edén Long Stay Facility for the elderly.
