A 10-year-old girl has died after being mauled by her family's dog at their home near Malton, North Yorkshire. Savannah Bentham suffered fatal injuries in the attack, which occurred at about 4.15pm on Friday. Despite efforts from paramedics and a member of the public, she died at the scene.
In a statement, her family described being 'utterly shocked and devastated' and paid tribute to 'our wonderful girl who we love so much'. They thanked the public for their support and asked for privacy as they grieve.
North Yorkshire Police said the attack appeared 'out of character', with Savannah and the dog having a close relationship. The dog, which has not been officially identified but is believed to be an XL bully-type breed, will be euthanised. A postmortem was conducted on Sunday, and an inquest will be opened in the coming days.
Fatal dog attacks are rising in England and Wales, with Savannah becoming the eighth victim in 2024, following nine in 2023. The American XL bully has been responsible for more than half of these incidents. Since the breed was banned in February, 400 XL bullies have been euthanised, with £76,500 paid to owners.
