Cheshire Police have arrested two additional suspects in connection with an ongoing investigation into alleged offences at a religious community in Crewe, bringing the total number of people arrested to 14. A 53-year-old Mexican woman was detained in Middlewich on suspicion of human trafficking and child neglect, while a 43-year-old British man was arrested in the Wilmslow area on suspicion of child neglect and attempting to pervert the course of justice.
Background of the Investigation
The probe, which began after allegations of serious sexual offences, forced marriage, and modern slavery were reported, involves members of the Ahmadi Religion of Peace and Light. In April, more than 500 police officers executed raids at the group's headquarters at Webb House and two other properties, leading to the initial arrest of seven men and three women. Two further individuals were arrested shortly after the raids, with all 12 previously released on conditional bail.
Recent Arrests and Safeguarding Measures
Detective Inspector Eleanor Atkinson stated that concerns about the welfare of children at Webb House prompted the latest arrests. "During our ongoing inquiries concerns have come to light in relation to the welfare of the children at Webb House which has resulted in today's arrests," she said. The force has applied for a Stalking and Trafficking Risk Order (STRO) against the 53-year-old woman, with a hearing scheduled at Chester Magistrates' Court on Thursday. All three recent arrestees have been released on bail pending further inquiries.
Police Reassure Public
Atkinson emphasized that the investigation is not targeting the religion itself. "While all the suspects we have arrested are members of the group, as we have stated from the beginning, this is not an investigation into the religion. Our investigation solely focuses on the serious allegations which have been reported to us," she said. She added that appropriate safeguarding measures are in place and there is no believed risk to the wider community.
