Celtic legend Jim Craig, a key member of the club's 1967 European Cup-winning side, has publicly disclosed that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease in 2022. The 83-year-old, one of only three surviving players from the 'Lisbon Lions', shared the news with The Herald.
Reflecting on his diagnosis, Craig said he was initially relieved to have an explanation for his symptoms, but admitted to feeling frustrated. 'I was pleased that they diagnosed something wrong, because I thought I was just ageing. But I was a bit surprised to hear what it was, and I find it very frustrating,' he stated.
Craig, who made over 230 appearances for Glasgow Celtic, noted that his memory for recent events is most affected. 'It's the recent, modern things I have trouble with,' he explained. Despite widespread concerns linking heading footballs to brain conditions, he remains unconvinced his condition is connected to his playing days, adding that he always tried to head the ball as little as possible.
His wife, Elisabeth, emphasised the couple's approach to managing the condition. 'It's something that we manage and we navigate our way around,' she said, adding that many people have been understanding. Celtic have not added to their European Cup tally since that famous night in Lisbon in 1967.
