Title decider background

The destination of the championship was decided in an epic shootout when Celtic hosted the then-league leaders Hearts on the final league match of the season. Hearts, formerly managed by current Rangers gaffer Derek McInnes, required just a point to become the first non-Old Firm side since Aberdeen in 1985 to lift the league championship. But it was ultimately Celtic who clinched the trophy.

The title deciding match was followed by a pitch invasion by Celtic fans, with Hearts later complaining that the invasion caused the match to be finished prematurely. Celtic supporters goaded some of the Hearts players, with Derek McInnes and his men later heading immediately along the M8 without taking on their post match media duties.

SPFL response

Subsequently, the SPFL slammed Celtic fans who invaded the pitch once the final whistle blew - but insisted referee Don Robertson did not end the game prematurely.
