A person suffering from smoke inhalation was taken to hospital after a major fire broke out at Catterick Garrison. The fire engulfed the roof area of Gaza Barracks Accommodation at the military base, prompting a response from multiple North Yorkshire fire crews.
Fire crews from multiple counties respond
Firefighters from County Durham and Darlington were also called to assist, with reports of smoke visible from more than two miles away in nearby Richmond. The fire was initially reported at approximately 8.10pm on Thursday (September 24) evening and was brought under control and completely extinguished by 2am.
Crews left the scene at 2.43am, though investigations into what sparked the blaze at the barracks will continue into Friday morning. One person was rushed to hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation, fire officials confirmed.
Official statement from North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue
North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said: "Fire appliances from Richmond, Reeth and Bedale responded to a report from on-site personnel of a fire within an accommodation block. On arrival, with the building found to be well alight, additional resources from Leyburn, Northallerton, Masham and an aerial ladder from Darlington were also mobilised.
"After the fire was brought under control, the last Fire resources left the scene at 02:43. On-site personnel will keep a watching brief overnight, with additional Fire Investigation due to take place later this morning. One person was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation."
