An explosion rocked a major city in Russia's Moscow region after a car burst into flames with the driver inside, according to initial reports. The incident occurred in Balashikha, the most populous city in Moscow Oblast, located approximately 25 kilometers east of central Moscow. The blast reportedly took place on Koldunov Street in the Aviatorov neighborhood, also known as "The Thirtieth."
Details of the Explosion
Russian news outlet Readovka reported on Telegram that the explosion erupted at 5:30 PM local time. The driver had just entered a BMW X3 and began driving when the alleged explosion occurred. Harrowing images shared by Ukrainian account Exilenova+ show a raging fire and thick black smoke rising from the flames. A short clip also appears to capture the moments before the blast, showing a car slowly moving along a line of parked vehicles before an explosion erupts.
The Moscow Times reported that the driver was pulled out of the burning car but died at the scene. The identity of the driver remains unknown. Parked cars in the vicinity were also reportedly damaged as a result of the blast.
