Nevada sheriffs have launched a murder investigation after a man was found dead in an apparent homicide at the Burning Man festival. Authorities are appealing for public assistance to identify the victim, who was discovered in the Black Rock City encampment on Saturday night as the festival reached its climax.
Pershing County Sheriff Jerry Allen described the victim as a white male aged between 35 and 40, approximately 6 feet tall and weighing 200 lbs, with short brown hair and facial hair. The man was found 'lying in a pool of blood' after a festival-goer alerted a police officer around 8pm to 9.30pm.
Part of the site was cordoned off as on-site police began their investigation. The Burning Man Project said it was cooperating with law enforcement and asked attendees not to interfere. Sheriff Allen warned that while the act appears to be a singular crime, participants should remain vigilant of their surroundings.
The festival has faced tragedy in previous years, including a death from a storm in 2023 and a man running into the fire in 2017. This year, a dust storm also destroyed temporary structures, including a dome known as the 'orgy dome'. Authorities continue to appeal for any information, however small, from the public.
