Burglar, 29, arrested after Hindley rooftop standoff

A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary following a rooftop standoff in Hindley, Greater Manchester. He remains in police custody for questioning.

Officers were called to reports of a burglary at a house on Oxford Road, Atherton at 9.15am on Sunday morning, October 4. A car was believed to be stolen during the burglary, which officers tracked before pursuing it to Armistead Street in Hindley.

The man then fled on foot before climbing onto the roof of a property on Lord Street, Hindley, at around 11am. Police and fire crews attended and a cordon was put in place around the area. Witnesses also reported seeing a police helicopter.

Arrest after three-hour standoff

After around three hours, the 29-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of burglary. He remains in police custody for questioning.

Pictures from the scene show the man dressed in dark clothing and wearing a face covering on the roof. He appeared to be holding items in his hand and making gestures as if he was going to throw the items down.

Police statement and thanks to community

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "At around 9.15am on Sunday 4 October 2026, officers were called to reports of a burglary at a property on Oxford Road, Atherton. A car was believed to be stolen during that burglary, and officers tracked the vehicle before engaging in a pursuit.

"The pursuit came to an end at Armistead Street, Hindley before the suspect fled on foot and climbed on to the roof of a property on Lord Street, Hindley at around 11am."

"Emergency services attended with specialist officers and partners dealing with the incident and a cordon was put in place."

"A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of burglary. He is currently in custody."

Inspector Rodney Ashton from GMP’s Wigan & Leigh district said: "I’d like to thank the residents and communities surrounding Lord Street for their patience as emergency services dealt with the incident.

"The incident has now been safely resolved, and road closures have been removed."
