A 64-year-old British woman has been arrested in Benidorm on suspicion of strangling her 66-year-old friend with a vacuum cleaner lead during an argument. The incident occurred in an apartment in the 'Little England' area of the Spanish resort, popular with British expats and tourists.
Police were called to the scene around midnight by a third woman, also a friend of the pair, who reported the altercation. However, officers arrived to find the victim already dead, with the cable still around her neck. An initial post-mortem has confirmed strangulation as the cause of death.
The suspect is said to have confessed to the murder after being taken into custody. She was taken to a health centre for a medical examination before being transferred to a police station. The vacuum cleaner lead has been seized for forensic DNA testing, and detectives have taken a statement from the witness.
A spokesman for the National Police confirmed the arrest, stating: “A woman aged 64 has been arrested on suspicion of killing another 66-year-old woman, both from the UK. The investigation is ongoing and at the moment we can’t give out any more information.”
The nature of the relationship between the two women has not been disclosed, but local reports suggest they were holidaying together. The victim's body was removed from the scene around 3am. A court has been placed in charge of the investigation, pending a full police report and post-mortem results.
