Bristol man jailed for 12 years after police attack

A dangerous offender has been removed from Bristol's streets after being sentenced to 12 years imprisonment for a shocking violent rampage at a city police station.

Kane Rothery, 31, unleashed a terrifying assault on police officers at Trinity Road Police Station in July 2023, leaving multiple officers injured and causing significant damage to police property.

Violent Outburst at Police Station

The court heard how Rothery became aggressive while in custody, launching an unprovoked attack on officers attempting to manage him. The violence escalated rapidly, with Rothery using both physical force and weapons to assault police staff.

During the frenzied attack, Rothery caused substantial damage to the custody suite and injured several officers, some of whom required medical treatment for their injuries.

Previous Violent History

Bristol Crown Court was told that Rothery had an extensive criminal record, including previous convictions for violence and assault. His history of aggressive behaviour contributed to the court's decision to impose a significant sentence.

Judge James Townsend described the attack as "sustained and brutal," noting the serious impact on the victims and the need to protect the public from such dangerous behaviour.

Police Welcome Sentence

Avon and Somerset Police have welcomed the substantial prison term, stating it reflects the seriousness of attacks on emergency workers.

A police spokesperson commented: "This sentence demonstrates that violence against police officers and staff will not be tolerated. Our officers come to work to protect the public, and they should be able to do their jobs without fear of being assaulted."

The case highlights the increasing challenges faced by police officers dealing with violent individuals in custody settings across the UK.
