Boy, 13, Drowns in Exeter Canal After Jumping In

Delvin Tinashe Musakwa, a 13-year-old schoolboy from Devon, drowned after jumping into the Exeter Canal at Clapperbrook Bridge on May 5, 2025. An inquest at Devon Coroner's Court in Exeter heard that he went swimming with friends and entered the water after a friend had safely returned to land.

Desperate Rescue Attempts

When Delvin failed to resurface, several members of the public jumped into the canal in an attempt to rescue him. Despite their efforts, his body was recovered from the water approximately 25 minutes later. He was taken to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Inquest Details

The inquest heard that Delvin was a football fan and had been playing with friends before the incident. The coroner is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death, including the safety of the canal area. No formal cause of death has been released pending further inquiries.
