A 12-year-old boy has appeared in court charged with the murder of a 60-year-old woman in Sheffield, where he was seen smiling in the dock. Marcia Grant died after being struck by a car in the Greenhill area of the city on Wednesday evening, shortly after 7pm.
The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons due to his age, also faces a charge of possession of a bladed article. He appeared at Sheffield Youth Court on Friday, where he spoke only to confirm his identity and occasionally smiled during the 30-minute hearing. Flanked by two security officers, he wore a dark blue jumper over a light blue shirt and blue trousers.
Grant was described by her family as “a warm, loving and dedicated wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend” and “a pillar of her community”. A friend said: “Marcia was a wonderful person. I was lucky to have known her and my heart is breaking for her family.”
Flowers and tributes were left outside a semi-detached house near the scene in Greenhill, which remained sealed off by police until Friday. The boy was remanded into secure accommodation and is next due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on April 11.
