A major police operation is in place for Bolton Wanderers' first Championship game of the season against Preston North End at the Toughsheet Community Stadium. Patrols have been stepped up at the stadium, surrounding areas, and public transport around Bolton ahead of the 12.30pm kick-off on Saturday, August 15.
Police Orders and Powers
A Section 60 order, allowing police to stop and search people and vehicles without reasonable suspicion, and a Section 34 order, permitting police to order anyone to leave the area and prevent their return, will be in effect between 9am and 6pm. Officers will also ask fans to remove face coverings.
Fans have been warned they will be 'dealt with robustly' if they cause trouble. The crackdown comes as Bolton return to the Championship following their promotion victory against Stockport last season.
Fan Engagement and Warnings
Greater Manchester Police said officers have engaged with fans from both clubs to ensure safety. Chief Superintendent Dave Meeney, Gold Commander for the match, said: "We have been engaging with supporters from both clubs in the lead-up to the fixture to ensure everyone can enjoy the occasion safely."
"The vast majority of fans attend football matches to support their team and enjoy the atmosphere, and we want them to be able to do so without disruption. We have put a comprehensive policing plan in place, including additional officers around the stadium, transport hubs and key routes in and out of Bolton."
"The Section 60 and Section 34 orders will provide officers with additional powers to respond quickly to any incidents of violence, disorder or anti-social behaviour. These powers will also allow officers to ask fans to remove face coverings."
"We would ask supporters to plan their journeys, allow extra time for travel and follow the advice of officers and stewards. Those who choose to engage in criminality or anti-social behaviour should expect to be dealt with robustly."
