The body of a 20-year-old man has been recovered from Llyn Glaslyn in Eryri after he got into difficulty in the water and was reported missing. Police received a report from the lake at around 7pm on Saturday, September 26, prompting a search to locate the missing man.
Search and recovery
Emergency services attended the scene along with members of the Llanberis Mountain Rescue Team, who searched the area throughout the weekend. The body of the man was recovered around midday on Sunday.
The man has been named as Mahammed Maim Islan, from London. His family have issued a statement paying tribute to the "bright and remarkable young man".
Family tribute
In their statement, the family said: "On 26 September 2026, at Llyn Glaslyn in Eryri (Snowdonia), a young man, Mahammed Maim Islan, born on 7 January 2006, who was from London and aged just 20 years, tragically lost his life."
"Mahammed was a bright and remarkable young man with a promising future ahead of him. He was a devoted son, a loving brother, and a cherished friend whose kindness and character touched the lives of all who knew him."
"His untimely passing has left his family, friends, and wider community heartbroken. He will be remembered for the joy he brought to others, the memories he created, and the positive impact he had on those fortunate enough to cross his path."
"Mahammed will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by everyone who knew him. Our thoughts and sincere condolences remain with his family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. The family would like to thank all involved in the search and recovery of Mahammed."
Police response
Chief Inspector Steve Pawson said: "Our thoughts remain with the man’s family and friends at this incredibly difficult time. The Coroner has been informed and enquiries are now underway."
