North Wales Police have confirmed that the body of a 21-year-old man was recovered from Llyn Geirionydd in Conwy, north Wales, on Tuesday evening. Emergency services were alerted at 9.17pm on July 7, prompting a multi-agency response involving the fire service, mountain rescue, underwater search teams, and the National Police Air Service.
Multi-agency search operation
A spokesman for North Wales Police said: "We received a call at 9.17pm on Tuesday (July 7) to reports of an incident at Llyn Geirionydd. Officers attended alongside colleagues from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the National Police Air Service, Mountain Rescue Team and the Underwater Search Team."
The body of the man, aged 21, was recovered from the water. His next of kin and the local coroner have been informed.
Popular but hazardous lake
Llyn Geirionydd is a well-known lake in Conwy, reputed to be the home of the 6th-century poet Taliesin, with a stone monument to him on the north bank. Despite its scenic appeal, the lake poses significant risks, especially during warm weather.
Open water safety warnings
As temperatures rise during the current heatwave, emergency services are urging the public to be cautious around open water. Gavin Murphy of South Wales Fire and Rescue Service advised: "We want people to enjoy the warm weather, but we are urging everyone to take care around open water. Rivers, lakes, reservoirs, quarries and canals can look calm and inviting, but they can be cold, deep and unpredictable. Warm weather does not mean warm water, and cold water can affect your breathing and swimming ability very quickly."
Murphy added: "This is not about stopping people enjoying themselves, it is about helping them enjoy the warm weather safely. Wherever possible, choose supervised locations to swim, never jump into open water, avoid alcohol around water, and if you see someone in trouble, call 999."
