Investigation After Body Found Near Iran World Cup Training Stadium
Body Found Near Iran World Cup Training Stadium in Tijuana

Mexican authorities have launched an investigation after a body was found near a stadium in Tijuana where Iran's national football team has been training for the World Cup. The corpse was discovered in a parking lot across from Estadio Caliente, inside a bag in the boot of a grey vehicle. Police opened the car due to a strong smell emanating from it. The victim's identity has not yet been released.

Visa Issues Plague Iranian Team

Iran's football team has faced significant visa problems ahead of the tournament. The team was forced to land in Mexico due to ongoing visa issues with the United States, where all three of Iran's group games are scheduled. Players and staff will have to fly in and out of the country on the day of each match.

Iran has stated that 15 officials and other staff were denied visas outright, calling it political interference. A US administration official commented: 'We will not allow the Iranian team to abuse this system to sneak terrorists into the United States under false pretences.'

Visa Costs and Restrictions

The visa recommended for football fans attending the World Cup costs around £137 and requires an in-person interview. Visitors must demonstrate their intent to leave the United States after their trip and their ability to pay all costs. More than a quarter of countries participating in the World Cup are affected by travel bans or have higher visa rejection rates, according to the BBC.

Some countries, including Algeria, Cape Verde, the Ivory Coast, Senegal, and Tunisia, are exempt from the fee. However, the costs and restrictions have made it difficult for fans to attend. The Department of Homeland Security is particularly concerned about fans overstaying their visas. Between 2023 and 2024, over 538,000 overstay events were documented.
