Human remains have been discovered in a remote area of Tasmania's north-west during the search for a Belgian hiker who disappeared more than two years ago. Police confirmed that the remains were found near Philosopher Falls, where Celine Cremer was last seen on 17 June 2023.
Inspector Andrew Hanson said the 31-year-old's family in Belgium had been informed of the discovery on Wednesday. He added that formal forensic testing was yet to be completed, though a pathologist had reviewed images and confirmed the remains were human.
Cremer was reported missing by her family on 26 June 2023, triggering a major search involving police, SES ground crews, swift water rescue personnel, drones and a helicopter. Her car was found in the falls car park the following day. An initial search was suspended on 10 July 2023 after experts determined she could not have survived the bad weather.
A privately led renewed search began in December 2025, and members of the group had previously found Cremer's phone in the Philosopher Falls area. Police deployed a cadaver dog to search an additional area of interest based on phone activity, but that investigation was unsuccessful.
Inspector Hanson expressed gratitude for the volunteer search parties, noting the strong community support behind the matter. He stressed that formal forensic analysis is required before the remains can be confirmed as belonging to Cremer.
