Police have cordoned off a section of the Marple Aqueduct in Stockport after the discovery of a dead body. The man, who has not yet been formally identified, was found near the historic aqueduct early this morning.
A witness reported seeing a police helicopter overhead as officers sealed off the area. At least two police vehicles were parked near a tree-lined spot close to the aqueduct.
A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police confirmed that the man's next of kin have been informed. Police are not treating the death as suspicious at this stage.

The Marple Aqueduct, built in the late 1700s, carries the Peak Forest Canal across the River Goyt. The 16-lock flight is Grade II listed and is one of the steepest in Britain.
