A man has been charged with murder following the death of a woman who was stabbed in the neck in Birmingham city centre. The victim has been named as Katie Fox, 34.
Ms Fox was attacked outside the entrance to Birmingham New Street station shortly before 9pm on Friday. She was taken to hospital with a serious neck wound but later died from her injuries.
Djeison Rafael, 21, was initially arrested near the scene and charged with attempted murder. After Ms Fox’s death, the charge was upgraded to murder. He also faces two counts of actual bodily harm, possession of a Stanley knife and assaulting an emergency worker.
West Midlands Police said the attack was believed to be unprovoked. Extra officers have been deployed in the city centre to provide reassurance. Witnesses described Rafael wearing an all-grey tracksuit, black hat, trainers and a rucksack.
Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood thanked police for their swift action and urged anyone with information to contact the force. Police continue to appeal for witnesses to the incident on Smallbrook Queensway.
