Backpack sparks bomb scare in Fallowfield, homes evacuated

A suspicious backpack sparked a major emergency response in Fallowfield, with bomb disposal units called to the scene and residents evacuated from their homes. The incident occurred on Abram Close on Saturday evening, June 6, prompting a large-scale deployment of emergency services.

Evacuations and Emergency Response

Around 20 neighbouring properties were advised to evacuate shortly after 6pm, with residents unable to return until approximately 11pm. The street was cordoned off as fire crews, ambulances, and army bomb disposal experts arrived. One resident described seeing a bomb disposal robot being sent into a property, with investigations focused on a front garden.

An eyewitness told the Manchester Evening News: 'I was going to my sister’s and they were telling everyone to evacuate out of the streets. They would not let us through and they started to put a cordon up. Everybody was told to go back.'

Police Statement

Greater Manchester Police confirmed officers responded to a 'suspicious item in a front garden' at around 6.05pm. The backpack reportedly contained bottles filled with an unknown substance. In an update on Sunday, the force stated: 'The scene has been stood down, package safely removed and an investigation is ongoing into the full circumstances.'

One resident expressed concern, saying: 'I'm a bit nervous about what's going on right now. This is quite a peaceful neighbourhood. This community is really tiny.' The cordon remained in place into the early hours of Sunday morning before being lifted.
