A Louisiana babysitter has been arrested after a three-year-old boy drowned in a backyard pool and was not found for 20 minutes, according to police.
Joann Johnson, 37, from Prairieville, turned herself in to authorities on Wednesday following the drowning at her in-home daycare. Deputies arrived at Johnson's home on May 18 in response to a 911 call, the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office said in a Facebook post.
First responders performed CPR and airlifted the child to hospital, but he later died. Investigators reviewed surveillance video which showed two young children playing near the pool when the victim fell in, without any safety gear. The toddler remained unconscious in the pool for about 20 minutes until Johnson was seen grabbing him.
An arrest warrant was issued for Johnson, who was booked into Ascension Parish Jail on one count of negligent homicide. Drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged one to four, according to the National Drowning Prevention Alliance, which warns it can happen in as little as 30 seconds.
