Armed police descended on Barry Island on Thursday evening, shocking tourists and visitors during the summer holidays, but it wasn't as it first appeared.

Incident details

Armed police rushed to the seaside town after officers received a report that two young men were in possession of a firearm. A significant number of police vehicles descended on the seafront along with specially-trained firearms officers.

A young boy was pictured in handcuffs while officers appeared to be searching him. However, no firearm was located.

Outcome

Instead, a South Wales Police spokesperson said officers located two teenage boys with a battery-operated water gun.
