Armed police were called to a street in South Tyneside on Friday afternoon after a man was reportedly threatened with a firearm. Officers were sent to Mile End Road in South Shields following an incident involving a weapon.
Incident near Jobcentre
According to police, a man was threatened with a suspected firearm after an altercation, and the suspects then left the scene. Pictures from the scene showed a large police presence outside the Jobcentre.
A Northumbria Police spokesperson said: "Just after 2pm today (Friday) we received a report of a disturbance outside a premises on Mile End Road in South Shields. It was reported that, following an altercation, a man was threatened with a suspected firearm before the suspects left the scene."
Police response and cordon
The spokesperson added: "Officers were deployed to the scene alongside firearm officers as a precaution. A police cordon was put in place to ensure the safety of the public."
"No one was reported to have been injured in the incident and there is believed to be no risk to the wider public. Enquiries are ongoing."
