Armed police and helicopter respond to Newport assault

A major emergency response unfolded in the Pillgwenlly area of Newport on Saturday evening after a woman was assaulted. Armed police, paramedics, and a helicopter from the National Police Air Service were pictured surrounding Francis Street at around 9pm.

Police say they received reports that a woman had been assaulted. She was taken to hospital with serious injuries and remains in a stable condition. No arrests have been made at this time, and police say their enquiries are ongoing.

Police statement on the incident

A spokesperson for Gwent Police said: "At about 9pm on Saturday October 3, we had a report that a woman had been assaulted on Francis Street in Newport. The woman was taken to hospital for treatment - she is not in a life-threatening condition."

"Armed officers did attend the report as a precaution, no arrests have been made at this time."
